3 simple steps to follow if you want a tourist visa for Australia

Whether you want to go on an adventure in the vast Australian desert or just want to visit a friend, you need a visa to travel to the country if you're not an Australian citizen. Fortunately, the government has simplified the process of obtaining a visa by allowing tourists from certain countries to apply for a visa online. Below are three steps that will ease your application process.

1st Step - Decide on the type of visa

There are two types of tourist visas depending on the length of your stay: short-stay visas, which allow you to spend up to three months in Australia, and long-stay visas that allow you to stay there for a maximum of 12 months.

2nd Step - Apply online

If you hold a passport from one of the 33 countries eligible for the Electronic Travel Authority, this means you don't have to visit a diplomatic office to submit your application. Among the eligible countries are Canada, the U.S., Japan and Malaysia.

Next, you must visit the ETA website and click on Apply for an ETA at the top of the page. Fill out the required information, such as your name, birth date, passport number and country of citizenship. After clicking "Next," you'll have to choose the type of visa you're applying for.

After finishing the application, visa processing time is usually immediate.

3rd Step - Apply through a diplomatic office

If you are not a resident of the 33 countries eligible for ETA, then you will need to visit an Australian diplomatic office, such as an embassy or consulate.

You should first make an appointment with the embassy. You can check for the closest embassy or consulate in your country on the Australian Government website. Find out what the application fees are and what documents are necessary before going to the appointment.

While the documents required and fees can vary depending on the country from which you come from, you will surely need a valid passport, the application fees, the filled application form, as well as other details related to your reasons for travel.

Keep in mind that visa processing usually takes longer through an embassy or consulate than with an ETA — it can take several weeks to complete. Ask the embassy about the visa processing times if you need to know them. This way you make sure you schedule your appointment in due time.

If you need more assistance, visa processing services exist to help people travel to and from Australia to places all around the world.
